Character: Yrael. More commonly known as Mogget.
Canon: The Old Kingdom series
Version: Book
Canon Point: In the reservoir (Sabriel)
Age: Eternal
Gender: Male

History:
I'll sing you a song of the long ago.
Seven shine the Shiners, oh!
What did the Seven do way back when?
Why, they wove the Charter then!
Five for the warp, from beginning to end.
Two for the woof, to make and mend.
That's the Seven, but what of the Nine--
What of the two that chose not to shine?
The Eighth did hide, hide all away,
But the Seven caught him and made him pay….

Yrael, the Eighth of nine great creatures of Free Magic, the most powerful creatures in existence. In the Beginning, the Seven banded together to form the Charter, a magic restricted by markings and rules, a more controlled form of magic. While Nine fought against the making and was broken, Yrael fled and hid, neither or nor against the Charter. However he was found by the Seven, and bound to the Charter, forced to obey one of the bloodlines that one of the Seven became a part of. Taking on a new name, “Mogget”, he has remained bound ever since, though several times he has been unbound. Always after though has he been rebound by the Abhorsen he must serve, the one charged with returning the Dead who walked in life to Death, and making them walk past the Nine Gates to an eternal sleep. Sort of a reverse Necromancer.

When Sabriel, daughter of the Abhorsen and soon to be the next, returns to the Old Kingdom after growing up in Ancelstierre, Mogget is the first to meet her once she makes to the Abhorsen's House. The talking cat startles her somewhat, but she soon understands what he is, to a degree. After some persuasion, he agrees to go with her to find her father, who is missing, giving her the silver ring to rebind him ‘just in case’. After taking off in a Paperwing, a flying aircraft powered by magic, Sabriel overestimates herself and loses control. In order to survive, Mogget yells at her to remove his collar. Unbound, he saves her, though once she awakens, he attacks her for the blood price he believes he is owed. She manages to figure out how to rebind him just in time. Mogget seems almost apologetic afterwards, and leads her to an interesting thing: a series of burial ships, wooden ships used to represent the old kings and queens. Sabriel finds that one man isn't quite as dead as the others though, and restores him. Touchstone, as he calls himself, then accompanies them.

The trio make it to the capital after a side adventure, where Sabriel believes her father is. They travel towards the old palace, once home of the royal family, now an area infested by the Dead. They enter into the reservoir under the castle, pursued by one of the Greater Dead and the reason for the Abhorsen's disappearance: Kerrigor, an old spirit who cannot pass beyond the final gate until his body is destroyed. Under the castle, they find the Great Charter Stones. Charter Stones usually hold Charter marks that flow through the stone and give it protecting qualities. However, two of the seven Great Stones have been broken, and the feeling of the break disturbs Sabriel and Touchstone. They find Sabriel's father in a diamond of protection, a magical barrier, his spirit trapped in Death. They set up their own diamond, and Sabriel prepares to go after him while Touchstone and Mogget wait, watching the Dead lining up and waiting for Kerrigor's appearance. It's shortly after this that Mogget suddenly ends up somewhere else entirely.

Personality: Mogget is an ancient creature. He was one of the Nine who were the first, though he did not help create the Charter magic with the Seven. As a result of his age, Mogget often acts as if he knows more than those around, and often it's because that's true. His knowledge is ancient, and when he is serious about something, there is no one better to ask questions of. Though there is no guarantee that he will answer.

Mogget is cryptic and sarcastic, often speaking as if in riddles by only saying half of what is needed. He also has no qualms about talking about things, and never explaining what they mean to a confused audience. It can make it a frustrating experience. He almost delights in confusing people, unless he actually wants them to understand, in which case he seems to act similar to an old man, sighing and scolding. Young people these days.

But he is helpful, in his own way. Sentiment has grown in him over time, a certain fondness for the family that he is forced to serve. More than one time he has saved the life of an Abhorsen, or helped them when they have asked it of him. When push comes to shove, he will often do what is needed. Even if afterwards he will scold or sigh over the incompetence of his charges. He acts kind of like a mother hen that is hiding what she is behind the mask of indifference. He will seem uncaring, but still manages to help in some way. The Abhorsen is probably one of the few people he will actually talk to and divulge knowledge to. Though that can be rare.

To those he doesn't know, Mogget won't be too interested unless they are helpful to him in some way. Or flatter him. Flattery can get you anywhere. As can fish. His cat form affects his personality somewhat. The normal person though won't interest him much. Over time, he may become slightly more interested in people, but it could take awhile. After all, he has all the time in the world. He can be sly to those who don't know him, sometimes even seeing whether they'd remove the collar for him. But he'd never really let them, due to the power he can't control.

Of the Seven, he often acts scornful of them. While others respect the great power the Seven had, Mogget could quite happily forget about them. When he meets one once again with Kibeth, the two constantly bicker and clash. Her being in the form of a dog doesn't help matters much either. He will listen to them though, as shown when he becomes unbound once near Astarael's shadow and yet stays to listen to her rather than attack Lireal. He also dislikes the Ninth, but that's mostly because Oranis would kill him along with the rest of the world if he ever became unbound and whole once more.

However, underneath the somewhat kinder exterior lies an inner evil. A scorn and hatred of being bound for so long. Mogget actively fights against this whenever he comes unbound and has an order to carry out, and at times can succeed. He managed to save Sabriel once before the evil turned on her. But eventually it succeeds and tries to take its slow revenge on the Abhorsen who bound it. If he can be rebound, Mogget will return to his normal self, often quieter and apologetic seeming for it. He doesn't like that part of himself. His true dislike is for the Seven, not those that carry on their essence.

Fears: Mogget fears very little. To a degree, he fears the Seven, as their powers can control him, but it's more a disrespectful and annoyed with kind of fear. He definitely fears Nine, as Oranis would destroy him as well as the world if he were ever to get free. Nine is one of the few things able to cause him harm. To a slight degree, he worries about the Abhorsen and the world, though this isn't a great fear, just a concern of sorts. But other than that, he fears little.

Weaknesses: The only real weakness Mogget has is that his abilities are weakened due to the binding on him. He has a slight weakness for making sure others are alright, if he's taken a liking to them, and things that affect cats get him too (such as catnip). And he can be bribed easily with fish. But other than that, he has few weaknesses.

Mundane Strengths/Abilities: Mogget in his true form is exceedingly strong, and very fast. However since he's bound, let's ignore that. In his cat form, he is quick and agile, but not particularly strong. He can shape-shift into an albino dwarf form, in which he is relatively strong, but not overly fast. He favours the cat from though. His sight is exceedingly strong, able to see things which require a telescope for a normal human.

Sensitivity/Magical Ability: Mogget has a variety of abilities. One of which is changing his form between cat and albino dwarf, along with others. Despite this, his shadow doesn't always match his shape. Because he is a creature of Free Magic, along with being one of the Nine, he can't die, or at least not permanently. One of the other Nine is seen walking in Death quite easily, so no doubt he can as well, and return to life. When Astarael sounds, the bell which calls all into Death, he hears it, and later returns, which backs up the idea that he can walk in Death and return to life. Mogget can also tell when there is magic being used nearby, and can sense when there are Dead about. He can also sense the Abhorsen, and can tell when one falls and another rises.

Special note: In the event his collar comes loose, all his powers increase incredibly, and without being able to get the blood price, he would no doubt go on a rampage through the house. Rebinding him requires the silver ring he can generate. The hoop becomes bigger, enough to slip around him. However to complete the binding requires one of the seven bells of the Necromancer and Abhorsen. So rebinding while in the house could be interesting.

Supply List:
- Red collar with a silver bell on it. This collar has a ton of magic soaked into it, which keeps him in his bound form.
- Silver ring with a ruby in it, hidden away. This is what re-binds him if he gets free somehow.

Sample RP post:
Sometimes he was grateful about being a cat. It meant you usually didn't land painfully. So when he ended up falling, Mogget landed gracefully and without any embarrassing moments to explain to Touchstone.

However, once he'd looked around, he frowned slightly. This wasn't the reservoir. Nor was it anywhere in the castle itself, from what he could remember. Though some of his memories were fading with time, he was sure of this. The next thing he was aware of was the sense of Death. Not the same as the Dead Hands and the Mordicant that Kerrigor had brought, no. These spirits were older, much more malevolent, and they felt different. More like the aware types of Dead. Just what he needed, to be stuck in a house with the more powerful kinds of the Dead, and the Abhorsen, both of them, were nowhere in sight. Hrm.

"Of course, they bring the servant when what they need is the master…" he muttered, taking a moment to wash his paw and clean the non-existent dirt from his head. How had he ended up here anyway? He hadn't be moved into Death and returned somewhere else, that would have been the most likely explanation for what was going on. But not, it was impossible. Sabriel hadn't taken him along, so he hadn't entered Death at all…

The cat sighed, getting up and stretching out, Saraneth chiming quietly on his collar. The bell sounded almost unsure, as if it sensed the Dead and did not understand why it was here. "You and I both, Six," Mogget muttered, going to trot along and find someone. There had to be someone here, after all. Perhaps they had food. A fish would be nice right about now…
